For many people, hiking Angels Landing is a bucket list item with a very high rating. But watch out! Zion National Park will piloting a permit program from January 3rd, whereby every visitor must be in possession of a permit from April 1. Also visit the forum on this topic.
Permit
Why a permit? National Parks in the USA have been dealing with large amounts of tourists for years. In this way, Zion National Park wants to improve visitor experiences, protect the park and increase the safety of the hike.
Lottery
You need a permit on every part of the route and also on every day of the year from April 1, 2022. There are two types of lotteries, a day-before lottery and a seasonal lottery. There is a $6 non-refundable application fee. Applicants awarded permits will be charged a $3 per-person fee. Permits may be printed after they are successfully awarded.
You can get a permit for three different time slots. At the moment these are: before 9:00 am, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm and after 12:00 pm. Each time slot represents a time range during which a hike should begin from the Grotto in Zion Canyon. During the start of this pilot, Zion NP will monitor visitor numbers. It is possible that these times can be adjusted.
Seasonal Lottery
If you want to plan the hike far in advance, you can participate in the Seasonal Lottery. Every quarter there is a lottery for the following months. The important dates are listed in the table below.
Day-before Lottery
If you were unable to obtain a permit during the seasonal lottery, you still have a chance at the day-before lottery. This lottery is, as the name suggests, a lottery where you try to get a permit the day before you want to go to Angels Landing. Dagelijks zal de loterij starten om 12:01 am en sluiten om 15:00 uur.
